As most of you know, my dad is in Iraq right now and won't be back until January. We are certainly grateful for a short 4 month term over there, but that also means that he won't be home for Christmas. I'm getting ready to mail him a package on Thursday and would love to include a note from you whether you know him or not. I did this a couple years ago when my brother Bernie was deployed over Christmas and I noticed last time I was up in AK that he still has the Christmas card that you all "wrote" in. I'd love for us to do this for my dad. I'll collect all the comments written and include them in a homemade Christmas card and send it out on Thursday. That means you have until 8:00 am EST to write something! My dad in his blues holding one year old Greta at Bernie's wedding.
Doing the electric slide with my hot mama while wearing his top gun glasses.
Helpful hints while writing your note:
1. My dad has never met a stranger. With the exception of the umpires at my little league games, he makes friends wherever he goes.
2. He goes by the name Bernie, Mr. Kale, Chief, or Dad.
3. He celebrates Christmas as opposed to Hanukkah or Kwaanza. :)
4. He doesn't like tardiness, so get your comment in soon!
5. He also doesn't like it when you take long showers and drain the water heater, but you shouldn't have to worry about that unless you live with him.
6. He loves Miracle Whip.
7. He doesn't know I'm doing this so please help me with this surprise!!
Consider this your opportunity to go green and save a stamp on my dime!

Merry Christmas Dad! I know I wouldn't be seeing you anyway, but I still miss you more knowing that I couldn't even if I wanted to. Greta talks about her G-Pop all the time, most recently about how the bee stung you on your lip. Ha ha. :) Will is due for another haircut too so come back home soon and we'll see you this summer. Can't wait! Love you,
Nat

Thank you Mr. Kale, for serving our country. I'm the wife of a veteran, so I'll be praying for both you and your wife during your stint in Iraq. Your family misses you and we all want to wish you a Merry Christmas and quick/safe return! Your daughter is so talented and thoughtful. I read her blog daily for inspiration. You raised her well!
Dear Mr. Kale,
Thank you for sacrificing all that you do for us and for your country!! I don't have anyone close to me that's overseas right now and I can't imagine how hard it must be to be away from your family during the Christmas season! May the Lord bless you and keep you safe and return you safely home in the Spring!
And thanks for having your daughter, Natalie. Her and I have had many opportunities to hang out and she's a blessing to have in my life! Her and I are thrift buddies :)
Merry Christmas to you!! God bless!

sick. Miracle Whip is a poor imitation at best. Sorry Dad. But I guess it's better than ketchup sandwiches!!:):)
I'm so proud to call you my Dad and for serving us overseas! I love you and am already looking forward to next summer!
Love, B
Thanks for putting this together Nat.
Merry Christmas Mr. Kale!
Thank you so much for serving our country. My husband and I know first hand the joys of being apart during the holidays. We will continue to pray for you. I cannot even begin to express our sincerest thanks to you.
We pray that God will keep you safe, bring you back quickly to your family. We also pray that Christmas will still be special to you, even if it's from a distance.
God Bless!

Merry Christmas Mr.Kale! We appreciate your service and dedication to protecting our country! Thank you for all your sacrifices especially being away from your family for months at a time. And when it comes to Natalie taking long showers I can totally vouch for that one! I can't tell you how many times I was waiting on her to finally get out of her hot shower to be left with a lukewarm one during our later college years. Have a very Merry Christmas!
Mr. Kale-
Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much for the sacrifice that you are making by being apart from your family during this Christmas season and serving our country overseas.
Although we have never met, I know your daughter Nat from Raleigh- and because she is so awesome, I know that you too have to be one fantastic Dad.
May God protect you Mr. Kale until you are home again with your family! You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Thanks, Bernie for all you do - not only for our country, but for the entire extended Batten/Kale family. You are definitely one-of-a-kind but that miracle whip flaw must be changed. You can always turn over the new leaf starting January 1. Love, Peggy

Dear Mr. Kale,
Thank you just doesn't seem like a big enough word. But since it is all I have, Thank you for your service to our country. I had the lovely opportunity of meeting Natalie this past summer. You and your wife must be so proud of a job well done...you raised her right! Please know you and your family are in my prayers as you celebrate Christmas apart.
Sara Miller
Dearest Bernie,
My heart goes out to you while you are deployed in Iraq over Christmas. Please know that my thoughts are with you. We will be together soon and you have my utmost respect for doing what you're doing (even if we don't know what it is). I keep a light burning for you here at home, just like Motel 6. I love and miss you.
Praying for you, Kathe ><>
